The Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake of January 17, 1995 caused the heaviest damage since the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake to cities in the Kobe-Hanshin area, which extends between the Rokko mountains and Osaka bay. The damage is noted not only by its severity, but also by its belt-like distribution away from the source faults. This specific distribution is attributed to the effects of the underground structure, therefore, we carried out a seismic refraction experiment there on December 12 and 14, 1995. This paper briefly outlines the experiment, and the results of detailed analyses will appear in a separate paper.
