Changes in the American healthcare system and other factors will continue to have a major impact on pharmacy practice and education. Among the most fundamental changes in pharmacy education is the conversion from a traditional lecture-based education to one that is problem-based or case study-based to more appropriately reflect the current and future demands upon pharmacy practitioners. This report will address the factors responsible for curricular change, an example of an integrated curriculum, and the problems and opportunities resulting from this transition. Several recommendations are included in this discussion which are derived from reviewing the curricula and the associated educational and research programs of several American schools intensively involved in curricular change.
