The lateral vibration of a rotating shaft having asymmetrical cross section fitted with an asymmetrical rotor or a rotor having three different principal moments of inertia was studied theoretically. Using a rotating rectangular coordinate system, the auther derived fundamental linear equations of motion, by which the modes and the corresponding frequencies of the free lateral vibration at any rotating speed were calculated. Then it was proved that when the rotor or the crosss section of the shaft or both of them are asymmetrical, there exist two kinds of critical speed bands, some typical examples of which were calculted numerically. Moreover the effect of gravity in the case of a horizontal shaft with asymmetrical cross section was studied. In this case the lateral vibration caused by gravity can be regarded as a forced vibration of ordinary linear type when viewed from the rotating ccordinate system, and the critical speeds due to the effect of gravity was determined.
