Rotating stall in cross-flow impellers was investigated analytically and experimentally. A cross-flow impeller which is a typical circular cascade without an axial suction has singular stall characteristics in all the ranges of the performance. Flow of a cross-flow impeller with or without a casing is characterized by a vortical flow in the whole flow region due to an eccentric vortex formed in the inner region of the impeller. Rotation of the eccentric vortex around the impeller axis is identical in one part with the rotating stall in the other circular cascades such as centrifugal pumps and compressors, and is different from those in another part. Experiments conducted in this study revealed the rotating stall characteristics of the cross-flow impellers. Navier-Stokes equations were linearized by using the small perturbation method and solved under several assumptions. Although the expressions thus obtained for rotating velocity of the eccentric vortex involve two unknown parameters to be determined experimentally, comparison of calculated and measured velocity gives good agreement.
