The maintained vibration of a bowed string with dissipative damping is exactly analysed by means of a Fourier series solution obtained by applying a method of series transformation. The frictional force characteristic is assumed to be a piecewise-liner one, with a constant dynamic friction and with a maximum static friction somewhat greater than the dynamic friction. In this paper, only the case of bowing at the middle point of the string and the vibration with the frequency equal to the undamped natural frequency are investigated. The successive configurations and displacement curves obtained reproduce almost exactly those given by Helmholz's law, with the differences of small additional displacements to overcome air resistance.
