The documents here introduced cover a period of 243 years (including 16 blank years) from 1632 to 1874,of which the taxation notices alone are edited and published on this issue, the receipts of the taxes being scheduled for next issue. The present survey introduces one of the very few instances where taxation notices have been preserved in such a number for such a long period. It is therefore expected that the documents, when edited and classified as they are, will prove highly valuable for the study of the taxation notices in former days, inasmuch as there have been few adequate studies in this field. Such a study, again, will throw great light on the question of the taxation system from the earlier days of Edo period to the beginning of Meiji era. The village of Fukusato, which is situated in the eastern part of the plains of Banshu, is in a dry district adjoining the salt farm district on the coast of the Inland Sea. The survey shows how often the village suffered from draught. Since the early days of Edo period, the village had belonged to the Shogunate and was under the jurisdiction of a local governor. Towards the end of the Shogunate reign, it was made a part of the territory of the Oshi clan, Musashi province, and after the abolition of clans in 1871,it was placed under Shikama prefecture. It will be seen therefore that while most of the documents were written under the Shogunate system, those written in the later years concern the system of a private territory.
