This study tries to clear out of transformation regional characteristics which had been depicted in books of regional geography on Hokkaido. Generally speaking, the regional characteristic being compounded of physical and social elements are not always persistent through times, but is usually volatile to be transformed in connecting with other regions. Geographical images is also somewhat associated with regional characteristics, which is a main aim for regional geography. In considering the geographical image, it reflects in geographers' cognition of place which an individual had already acquired from their experience and been influenced by different informations. It is however pointed out that most of images even if personal one commonly share with features prevailed or seem to have been similar to those, which socially accepted in some period. The author also intends to study on regional division shown in the books. The results are as follows. 1) Transformation of the images on Hokkaido There have been three periods with regards to the different image. After Meiji-era Hokkaido was originally considered as a remote colony in northern periphery. A physical condition like coldness and deep snowfall had been additionally stressed to the image. This image having been retained after the World War Second made Hokkaido claiming beneficial situation in allocating national budget for regional development. A new image as only one hope left for Japan and exotic land appeared after the War, because Hokkaido was expected to contribute to national economy for providing food staff, energy and accepting people evacuated from overseas territories. However new one was gradually accepted as economy in Japan had progressed. Hokkaido, heavily depending on national budget, seems to have been a sort of burden for national government in financial crisis. It is required to find out other image according to situation with which Hokkaido is confronted. 2) Changes of regional division in Hokkaido All the books reviewed have not included clear regional division on Hokkaido. In many of books there are two types of the division in terms of scale, such as major and secondary boundary. In case of the major one, Hokkaido was originally divided into three sub-regions like western, central and eastern one. Later on there was also northern part subdivided from eastern one. Among these boundaries the divisions between central, eastern and northern were common in many of books. On the contrary boundary between central and southern had been rather different than the present one usually confined with the Oshima peninsular.
