The author stated the potential of an English captioned movie in the research annual No. 30 of Numazu College of Technology in 1995. Based on the previous findings, another two longitudinal experiments were conducted. The aim of Experiment 1 was to examine the influence on word recognition and listening comprehension. Unfortunately listening comprehension did not progress as expected although some progress was made in word recognition in the groups presented differently at the first and second presentation. To investigate the effect on listening comprehension again, Experiment 2 was conducted with other comprehension tests designed differently from those of Experiment 1, which resulted that the group trained under the condition of English captions and English sound made most progress among the groups. The progress in word recognition and in reading comprehension was also examined. The author concludes that rapid left to right eye movements in reading captions might be transferred to the expansion of word recognition and rapid print reading whereas listening comprehension ability does not show much progress by an English captioned movie alone.
