In machine tool spindles, angular contact ball bearings are mainly used, and for a high speed spindle the heat generation in bearing is one of the most significant problems. To prevent the temperature increase, grease lubrication is employed up to dn value of 1.0 million, and air/oil lubrication enables up to dn value of 1.5 million. Moreover, for the higher speed ranges, oil-jet lubrication is newly developed and the practical application is tried by machine tool builders. In this report, the relationship between a quantity of lubricant and the heat generation is discribed based on the tested results when oil-jet lubrication is applied to the higher speed drive of an angular contact ball bearing.
