In this report, performance test of automotive differential gears which is developed by Gleason Co., is carried out. It is called the super differential gears. Generally, differential gears which is called the normal differential gears use straight bevel gears as planetary gears. The super differential gears use combination of worm gears and spur gears as planetary gears. Worm gear is possible to rotate reversely when lead angle is larger than friction angle. The super differential gears are utilized with the peculiarity that worm gears and spur gears can be rotated reversely. When difference of rotational frequency occurs in the right and left axles, differential gears absorbs its difference by rotating themselves of worm gears and spur gears. Material of worm gears and spur gears are used cemented steel which is case-hardened. Hardness of teeth surface on the worm are HV950 and on the worm wheel are HV750. The following conclusions are results on this study. 1) In the super differential gears, when difference of rotational frequency in the right and left axles occurs, a larger difference of torque is needed in compare with the normal differential gears. 2) When difference of rotational frequency occur in the right and left axles, power is transmitted independently of difference of torque. Therefore, when the automobiles run on the rough road, the wheels don't slip. 3) In this super differential gears, running-in is needed before they are used. Without the running-in the teeth surface of worm gears will be damaged soon.
