D.H. Lawrence had the dreadful misfortune of meeting the First World War just before everything became ripe for him : his marriage to a German lady closely related to 'the Red Baron' and his novels being banned in Britain. His longing to live outside the United Kingdom was marred by the Great War. The present author depicts the relationship between the precarious transformation of Lawrence's "Rananim" and his being frustrated by everything related to Englishness, with special reference to his trouble in acquiring passports.
