A phage F-induced deoxyribonuclease (phage F-induced DNase) has been purified about 100-fold from cell-free extracts of Bacillus subtilis var. amyloliquefacus infected with phage F. The enzyme hydrolyzed either native or heat-denatured DNA, hydrolyzing the latter 4-fold faster than the former. It was suggested that the enzyme is an exonuclease which produces only deoxyribonucleoside 5'-monophosphate. It had a pH optimum of 10.0 and a temperature optimum of 50℃, and required Mg^<2+> for its enzymatic activity.
