We have developed a method to measure the local potential change caused by the movement of the interface between an electrolyte solution and a dilute electrolyte solution (or ion-exchanged water). To detect the interface movement due to the ionic diffusion of the electrolyte, we devised an apparatus with a vertical tube containing electrodes to detect local potential change. We established a set of empirical-theoretical equations to relate the macroscopic potential change measured with the electrodes to the diffusive movement of electrolyte ions. A diffusion coefficient can be determined by repeating the numerical calculations using the set of equations until the numerical result coincides with the experimental one.
