We studied the movement of the interface between electrolyte solution and distilled water. This movement was detected as the local electric potential change by applying an external electric field and could be expressed as ν^^-∝c^<1.00±0.05>d^<2.8±0.5>, where ν^^- is the mean traveling velocity of the interface, c the concentration of electrolyte, and d the diameter of the connecting tube used in our experimental apparatus. Our aim in the present experiment was to consider whether an ion channel in an excitable membrane can act as pore for movement of ions or not. On the assumption that the validity of the above expression can be extrapolated to the scale of diameter of the ion channel, it is concluded that ion channels in excitable membranes can not act as pores for movement of ions, but operate solely as gates.
