In order to obtain high purity zinc from crude metal by vacuum distillation, a few experiments were made with the apparatus of laboratory scale. A substantial amount of lead, which is less volatile than zinc, was removed from crude zinc by passing it through the filter layer consisting of small pieces of chamotte brick. Experimental data agreed fairly well with the results of thermodynamic calculation. By condensing the metal vapor into liquid state and also by the aid of baffle plates and overflow pipes, more effective separation was attained for volatile cadmium. By this method the purity of zinc increased up to 99.99+% from the starting crude metal of 99%. Based on the experimental data obtained for zinc, a few experiments were also carried out for the refining of cadmium in the bench scale. The distillation furnace of 30 kg in capacity, batch type, was newly designed for this purpose. Advantages of the furnace are as follows ; an accurate determination of the end point and easy handling of distilled and remaining metals, etc. Lead, thallium, zinc and other impurities were removed from crude cadmium of about 99.9% which was in the intermediate state of cadmium recovery process. The purity of cadmium obtained was 99.999%. In addition, successful results were also obtained for the industrial equipment of 200 kg in capacity.
