In the iron-nail (or soda-iron) method of the fire assaying, it has been stated that the slag should have a silicate degree below 1,and be high in the content of soda because basic alkaline slags have a high dissolving power for sulphide. The effect of varying contents of silica on the formation of matte phase from synthetic FeS-Na_2O-SiO_2 melts was examined at temperatures ranging from 1,050° to 1,250℃ and variations in the compositions of produced matte and slag due to the change in silica content were also determined. The melting was carried out under a current of nitrogen using an iron crucible. The mattes and slags obtained were analyzed chemically for Fe, S and SiO_2. The results thus obtained were compared with those of the iron-nail method in practice. The results obtained are as follows : (1) When the content of silica is less than about 33%, a single homogeneous melt usually called slag in nail assay is obtained and when it exceeds about 33%, matte and slag phases begin to separate. (2) The separation of matte from slag becomes more complete with increasing content of silica, that is, the mutual solubility between matte and slag decreases. (3) Decreasing temperature will decrease the mutual solubility. (4) Matte and slag obtained are mainly composed of ferrous sulphide and sodium silicate respectively. The similar fact that the varying content of silica affects the production of matte and slag is seen in the FeS-FeO-SiO_2 system reported by one of the authors and Prof. Kameda.
