This paper discusses the knowledge of proper names based on Canale's (1983) framework of communicative competence. It examines various ways in which the knowledge of proper names relates to communicative competence. For the discussion of culture-specific knowledge required to understand allusions to proper names, I specifically draw upon Bachman and Palmer's (1996) model of language use and suggest that the knowledge of proper names should be represented as a schema that consists of topical knowledge and figurative knowledge. I also examine in some detail communication strategies involving the use of proper names. It is suggested that an adequate framework of strategic competence needs to address not only online strategies but also offline strategies such as the use of dictionaries. It is also argued that preemptive (proactive) strategies as opposed to compensatory (reactive) strategies are an essential aspect of dealing with proper names.
