It is often said that 'peace education' in Japan started after World War II. As an example of prewar 'peace education', I examined the thoughts and the educational practice of Michi Kawai (1877-1953), who established the Christian school, 'Keisen Girl's School' in 1929. She thought that there would be no more war if misunderstandings and prejudice could be removed by Christian faith and an appreciation of others. Her type of education can be called 'education for peace through international understanding based on Christian faith'. In this paper, I attempted to consider the process of the formation of her thoughts, as well as her, thoughts and practice of 'peace and education'.
