In general, laminated composite plates behave differently from homogeneous orthotropic plates due to the coupling effect. In the present paper, the coupling effects on the buckling stresses in the cross-ply and angle-ply antisymmetric laminated plates subjected to biaxial compression are analysed by use of the equilibrium equations. Then, the resultant effects of various factors such as lamination constitution, number of layers, lamination angle, plate aspect ratio and biaxial compressive load ratio are evaluated. It is found that the coupling effects of laminates rapidly die out as the number of layers, N, increases, and the buckling stresses become close to those for homogeneous orthotropic plates. The buckling stresses in antisymmetric laminates with N=2 are especially much decreased in both cross-ply angle-ply laminates.
