My discussion has been phrased in terms of a detailed examination of the text from the point of view of each clause. In the interest of ease of investigation, I have taken a particularly rigid approach to the notion of information. My analysis has focused on the relationship between the placement of 'newsworthiness' in the clause and one of the text goals of John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, that is, the creation of his image as a courageous leader. Due to lack of space, the analysis was limited to clauses which are specifically significant for his text goal. The content of the various N-Rhemes examined regularly concerned information which related to the goal of the text. Several bits of evidence pointed to the trends of what meanings were used for the creation of Kennedy's image as a courageous leader. Many N-Rhemes in the beginning portion of the text were devoted to the expression of 'freedom,' 'change,' and 'newness,' and to the highlighting of the moment of his inauguration, and to the placement of Kennedy in the same tradition as that of the past great leaders. All these meanings can be said to be the basis of the characterization of Kennedy as a courageous leader. The nuclear clauses of the respective text portions assigned to the message to the particular receivers emphasized the meanings of cooperation, help, and request that Kennedy offered for the support and defense of the freedom. The various clauses supporting these offers emphasized the information expressing the enemies to vanquish, the present critical situations, the philosophy which a great leader should have, and various actions for the solutions to the problems. These meanings were not only devoted to the elaboration and justification of Kennedy's claims coded in the nuclear clauses, but contributed to the enhancement and completion of his image as a courageous leader. The information expressing the enemies and the critical situations, especially, tended to contain Kennedy's extreme involvement, which was the linguistic device central to the evocation of the image of a leader of great determination. By manipulating in clauses the placement of meanings he wanted the world to remember, John F. Kennedy was able to, in turbulent times, establish himself as a great leader in his inaugural address.
