From 1951 to 1964, somatological investigations of the Ainu were made by the present author in Hidaka, Iburi, Tokachi, Kitami, Sorachi and Tesio provinces of Hokkaido. Subjects reported consist of female adults of the pure Ainu (252) and the Ainu-Japanese breeds (185). Somatometrical studies were carried out by Martin's method. Mean relative deviations were calculated on trunk and extremities, cephalic and facial parts, and mean deviations of these three parts were summed up to estimate quantitative affinity among the groups. According to the author's previous study, the present Japanese are classified into two local groups, the Tohoku-Japanese(the people of northeast of Japan) and Kinai-Japanese, (the people of southwest of Japan) Physical characteristics of the female Ainu are closely similar to those of the male Ainu. Specific physical traits of the pure Ainu are not observed in the neighbouring races, advocating Koganei's "Rasseninsel". The mixed Ainu generally resemble the Tohoku-Japanese and the Kinai-Japanese are more similar to the Korean. It is suggested that the physical traits of the Ainu and the Korean may have been the main components of the present Japanese.
