In this paper writer has tried to relate some of Edward Gregory's spellings to the original sounds which they may have represented when the CMC was first written down. It may seem that there is little connection between his spellings and the original ronunciations. But we must remember that he was probably 'modernising' the text, consciously or unconsciously, as he copied. If we analyse his spellings and relate them to the rhymes, we find that in perhaps 95 percent of the cases they rhymed in the original pronunciation. The remaining five percent are mainly what we may call 'near-rhymes'. We must remember that the plays were written by fairly ordinary people, and handed down by ordinary people. The writer hopes that this paper has gone some way towards providing a basis for a more complete study of the phonology of CMC.
