An exploratory study was conducted among a select group of second year English language majors at Seirei Womens College. The study centered around generational conflict, school life and self-image or feelings about oneself. Generational conflict was evident as most students felt that the younger and older generations are quite different in their way of thinking and behaving. Also, few students thought parents, teachers or neighbors understood youth problems. The gap between the generations is quite wide consistent with generational conflict in Japan at least in the past three decades. Students, however, who responded that significant other adults (parents, teachers and neighbors) had some understanding of youth problems felt more positive about themselves (less confusion and more stability in their life) than students who did not think significant other adults understood at all. School life showed much less conflict for students than generational gap as almost all students felt at least somewhat attached to the school. And, the students most attached (liked school and had good teacher relations) to the school were the least confused and felt most stable about their life. In short, the closer students identified with significant other adults and their school the more positive their self-image.
