<Research Notes>Personality Factors Affecting Linguistic Confidence

There has long been much research and argument concerning the relationship between the foreign language learner's personality and his/her competence and/or performance in foreign language. In the present study, based on the results of Watanabe and Purcell(1985), which showed a high correlation among linguistic competence, performance and the learner's confidence in target linguistic structures, the authors arrived at the conclusion that personality is playing a role in affecting competence into performance by influencing the learner's perception of the degree of difficulty concerning individual target linguistic structures. This study attempts to cast some light on the issue of individual differences among learners of English as a foreign language.
