The fierce debate rages on ; to teach grammar formally in the language classroom or not. This review takes a close look at the research that was written and published in the leading journals in the world of Second Language Acquisition in the 1990s. The goal of this project was to discover whether formal instruction has a place in the language classroom and if so what is it. Ten studies covering the topic of explicit instruction received close examination. The direction that the current research is moving in, definitely points towards form focused instruction in meaningful communicative situations.
