Although extensive research has studied group collaboration in SLA little has examined how group participation directly effects the results of L1 and L2 writing. The goal of this case study is to discover the contributing factors to success in using group collaboration in foreign language writing classrooms. The participants were asked to write, discuss and rewrite in their L1 and L2. The processes were closely investigated and analyzed. It was found that topic selection and active group participation contributed highly to the amount of success that writers have when writing in either their L1 and L2. Implications for writing cross culturally are included along with ideas of how language teachers can assist their learners in gaining more from group collaboration sessions.
