This research is an attempt to shed some light on the structure of Japanese motherhood through an analysis Fairy Tales. In comparing Japanese and Western Mother hood major differences can be observed. Western motherhood places emphasis on individuality. However, Japanese motherhood seems to lack individualis, and appears to be controlled by a sense of total ambience of place. This pervading sense of ambience can also be observed in life in contempopary society. In this paper I will analyze the typical characteristics of Japanese motherhood. By analyzing fairy tales handed down from ancient tims in Japan the basic characteristics of Japanese motherhood can be observed. In this paper I will take up the fairy of princes Anju and king Dzushi, In this tale what becomes clear is that Japanese motherhood is dependent on ambience of place. Individual feelings dissolve into the overall ambience, and who is feeling what cannot be discerned. In this paper I define this all-pervading sense of the ambience of place as ba. Further, what also becomes evident is that as people develop changes occur throught ba transference. Thus, Japanese motherhood depends on ba, and ba are plentiful in Japanese society. Later, I hope to analyze the atructure of ba in more detail.
