Althogh the alumina ceramics are bioinert, they can't cement directly or chemically on the bone. The author made the porous surfaced alumina ceramics to obtain the enough mechanical bonding strength between bone and implants. The dense alumina columns of 3 mm in diameter were sintered with a porous alumina layer by 1 mm with porosities of 10 and 30%, for the animal experiments using tibiae of rabbits. Histological examinations, contact microradiograms and SEM revealed the rapid and massive ingrowth of the new bone into the porous layer as early as 2 weeks after implantation. Three or 4 times of interface shear strength were obtained by pull-out tests in both groups comparing to the control dense colums. Although the compressive strength of porous alumina of 30% porosity was one fifteenth to that of 10%, breakage of the ceramic structures was not obseved and shear strength of 30% group reached to the 10% group at 8 to 12 weeks. Porous surfaced alumina ceramics were proved to be a promising material in designing the cementless bioinert prosthesis.
