New Zealand Black×New Zealand White F. hybrid mouse (B/W F_1) is a murine model of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Humans and this mouse with SLE, have anti-DNA antibodies, and show an abnormal response to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We examined the antigenicity of DNA to determine the origin of anti-DNA antibodies and the speed of repair of the UV damaged DNA. DNA was extracted from spleen cells of B/W F_1 and BALB/c (control) mice. Antigenicity of DNA was determined by ELISA. No significant difference in antigenicity of the DNA was found between B/W F_1 and control mice. The ability to repair UV damaged DNA was determined by measurement of priming ability. UV damaged DNA was repaired more rapidly in B/W F_1 mice than in control mice. In conclusion, the DNA from B/W F_1-spleen cells has no particular antigenicity, but UV-induced DNA was repaired more rapidly in B/W F_1 mice.
