For the purpose of investigating the dynamics of bone under vibratory condition, three-dimensional modal analysis was used for in vitro determination of the natural frequency, mode shapes, and associated damping ratio of the human femur. Geometry of the femur was measured three-dimensionally and examined on X-rays. Impulse hammer method was applied to obtain the frequency response function in this skeletal structure. Modal parameters were estimated from the data of compliance (x/F), and corrected by the method of least squares. The natural frequency of the dried femur was determined as 353 Hz, and the damping ratio was 0.6%. The modal animations revealed that the femoral head could transmit more energy to the entire femur than either the greater trochanter or the femoral condyle.
