Hydrogen absorption, ethylene adsorption and ethylene hydrogenation have been investigated on titanium and titanium hydride powder over the temperature range 20° to 500℃, and the pressure range 30 to 500 torr. Behaviour of hydrogen absorption was similar to the results by Haag. Owing to its scanty adsorbed volume, ethylene adsorption had not been able to estimate directly, but it was deduced that ethylene adsorption was operative, since the rate of hydrogen absorption was exceedingly retarded by pretreatment of ethylene. The catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation was very low on metallic titanium, but it was observed that titanium hydride (TiH_X : X=1.5∿1.8) had its activity of some extent. The initial rate of hydrogenation was first order in ethylene, and indicated a maximum in hydrogen. The apparent activation energy for hydrogenation was amounted to 4.0kcal/mole at higher pressure range of hydrogen. From these results, it was deduced that the rate determining step was similar to that of tantalum powder. The comparison among the catalytic activities on palladium, tantalum and titanium is discussed.
