• Objective : The objective of the current survey was to assess smoking prevalence among schoolteachers. Design : A cross-sectional study was designed employing questionnaires. Setting : Participants consisted of 5757 schoolteachers (3220 males, 2537 females) of all public schools operated by Nagoya city. Subjects were assessed in 1997. Main outcome measures : Smoking status in schoolteachers was measured in terms of age, gender, position and education specialty. Results : Prevalence of smoking was 38.6% in men and 2.5% in women, which was significantly lower than levels observed among the general population in Japan (chisquare test, p<0.01). With respect to age among male teachers, a significant age-related increase in smoking prevalence was observed by Cochran-Armitage trend (CAT) test (p<0.01). The average number of cigarettes consumed per day among current male smokers was 21.7. Older subjects demonstrated significantly higher cigarette consumption, evaluated using analysis of variance with linear contrast (p<0.01). The ratio of heavy smokers, defined as smoking more than 40 cigarettes per day, was also higher in older male teachers (CAT test, p<O.01). Smoking prevalence among principals and vice-principals, and among physical education (PE) teachers, was significantly higher in male subjects, compared with prevalence among general teachers after age adjustment (chi-square test, p<0.05, p<0.01, respectively). Conclusion : Our study demonstrated three problems. Smoking prevalence of the entire schoolteacher population was not low, considering educational levels. Teachers holding administrative positions showed significantly higher smoking prevalence than non-administrative teachers. PE teachers, who teach health promotion to students, smoked more than the average teacher significantly.
