Eleanor Farjeon's short stories are usually considered to take a sentimental attitude that they exclude severe reality, partly because conventional forms and rules of fairy tales are used in her stories. Her works, however, include a rebellion against a person in power and women's desire to be free from the traditional sexual role. By doing this, Farjeon's works subvert the convention of classical fairy tales which have helped to support the establishment though her way is not sometimes obvious. This paper will mainly deal with "The Little Dressmaker," "The Seventh Princess" and "Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep" and show how Farjeon's works use the forms of fairy tales and at the same time subvert their convention.
