In this paper, we develop an alternative retailer broker maker model (ARBM) for analyzing the impact of distribution structure on use of information technology. First, We define six alternative types of inter-organizational structure that are abstracted from inter-organizational production distribution information networks mainly in daily goods industry. Then, we examine the characteristics of Japanese distribution stucture in chronological order, and find that after 1980's, the Japanese distribution structure has evolved in a pattem of centralization→direct-transaction→integration→brokerage-transaction. And then, we develop the ARBM model to compare the dominance among structures with respect to the distribution cost and the order cost by changing the number of components, the distribution frequencies, and the information communication process cost index. As a result, we find that a decreasing in the information communication process cost index enables us to describe the evolution process of Japanese distribution structures we induced from the cases in chronological order. In conclusion, the ARBM model enables us to describe the evolution progress of distribution structure caused by decreasing of information communication process cost. And we can find out a tendency that the inter-organizational distribution information networks are gradually evolving to the brokerage-transaction type.
