This study examined how mothers of adolescents subjectively recognized their children's autonomy, and how and whom they asked for advices in relation to identity development in midlife. Thirty women (47-59 years old) are interviewed by groups of 2 to 7 people, so as to reduce tension to talk. In addition to the initial purpose of this study, each participant's identity was analyzed through narratives. Then, this study concluded with a hypothesis to understand identity development in terms of identity flexibility, which is defined to have soft (in contrast to rigid) identity as well as strong (or achieved) identity concurrently. In the latter part of this study, identity softness was observed with some cases.
