• This paper reviews two important publications of the World Bank, The East Asian Miracle (EAM, 1993) and East Asia : Road to Recovery (RtR, 1998), with a view to obtaining basic understanding on the twin questions of What Went Right and What Went Wrong during the Miracle period of East Asia. Particular attention is paid to the development model that was responsible for high and sustained growth during the Miracle period, structural weaknesses that developed behind the Miracle and contributed to the severity of the crisis, and the nature of structural reform and adaptation needed for next stages of sustained growth.
