The Circumplex model of marital and family systems has received attention from both researchers and practitioners in the field of family studies/therapy. Up until now, however, its empirical instruments have repeatedly failed to show one of the most fundamental hypotheses of the model, namely the curvilinear relationship between the model's two dimensions, cohesion and adaptability, on one hand, and the functioning/adaptiveness of the family system on the other. Critical examinations of FACES III revealed that its Likert scale items failed to capture the extremely and dysfunctionally high state of cohesion construct and its empirical measure. The 8 point Thurstone equal distance appearing scale was constructed on both cohesion and adaptability dimensions. From an item pool of 233 cohesion and 145 adaptability items, a 74 item (37 cohesion and 37 adaptability) preliminary scale was administered to 1200 families whose children go to one to four private high schools in Osaka. 386(32.2%) families returned the questionnaires. Incomplete quastionnaires and highly biased response were excluded from 317(26.4%) for item analyses. The average ages of family members were 47.1 for father, 44.4 for mother, and 15.8 for children. From the item analyses, the 15 cohesion and 16 adaptability final scales for father, the 11 cohesion and 15 adaptability final scale for mother, and the 12 cohesion and 14 adaptability final scale for child were constructed. Structural equation modeling techniques were applied to the multitrait (cohesion and adaptability)-multimethod (father, mother, and children reports) matrix and it supported the final scale's convergent and discriminant validities.
