In the spring of 2002 Nagasaki University will create a new language center as part of the Liberal Arts faculty. This offers a very good chance to review and improve the curriculum of two important courses, Comprehensive English and English Communication. The following paper describes some of the problems with the current curricula and gives suggestions on how the curricula can be improved. This includes 1) standardizing goals, methods, content, and evaluation, and 2) collecting data from other departments, potential employers, alumni and current students and teachers as a means of designing a more relevant curriculum.
