Sleep parameters in 17 mentally retarded infants with cerebral malformations (4 months to 4 years and 10 months of age) were studied throughout nocturnal sleep. The sleep parameters were compared with the basic norms of non-retarded infants obtained by several other authors and discuseed. The following results were obtained. Sort sleep (n=5) and long awaking times (n=7) were noted. Ten cases showed abnormal developmental wakefulness and sleep EEC patterns as follows: absence of sleep spindles (n=7) which included cases of absence of EEC patterns of stages 1-4 (n=1) and wakefulness, stages 1, 2, and REM sleep (n=1) and the remaining cases with absence of sleep spindles (n=1), and spindles with extremely low incidence (n=2). A significant decease of DQ was found in subjects with distinguishable stages including less than 2 of wakefulness, stages 1-4 and REM sleep, as compared with those patients whose' stages were all distinguishable. The percentage of REM sleep decreased in 6 subjects compared with non-retarded infants. It was suggested that the short sleep and long awaking periods during the night had an effect on the sleep during the daytime in mentally retarded infants of the hospital, welfare facilities, and nursery school.
