The innovation that is taking place in the curriculum in the Department of English Communication of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Asian Studies at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration (NUCB) is examined against the background of the world role of English, and against the introduction of innovative ELT curricula in other Japanese universities. In the further development of NUCB's English language programme in an age of increasing globalization, it is important to build on the established strengths of both the university and the current general English language curriculum. This can be done by expanding the provision for courses in English for Specific Purposes. This article looks at both the issues involves in the expanding curriculum and acts as a record of some of the changes that are already taking place.
