The Javanese wedding ceremony may be one of the most intricate wedding ceremonies in the world. Finding an ideal spouse in Javanese culture is based on the principle of bibit, bebet, and bobot : bibit ("seed") refers to the mental and physical condition of the prospective spouse, bebet to provenance, and bobot ("weight") to general skill and intelligence. In addition, the compatibility of the couple in terms of their birthdays or names according to Javanese numerology is also critical. If they are incompatible, the wedding can be cancelled. The process leading to the wedding is nontoni ("watching"), that is visiting the girl's house and observing her (but this is virtually not practiced anymore, as arranged marriage is a thing of the past), proposing, binding, engagement, wedding, and ngundhuh manten, another wedding ceremony held by the bridegroom's parents. The wedding ceremony itself consists of the following rituals: construction of temporary structure (pasang tarub), delivery (srah-srahan), delivery of bouquets (kembar mayang), apprenticeship (nyantri-not practiced anymore), shower party (midodareni), official wedding, and wedding party. In the wedding party, the following rituals are observed: throwing each other tied betel leaves, washing the bridegroom's right foot by the bride, stepping on an egg by the bridegroom, pouring of symbolic income by the brideroom on to the bride's lap (kacar kucur), spoonfeeding, weighing, genuflecting, walking around the guests (kirab) and changing outfits. Other attendant things include an array of offerings for different purposes, gamelan (Javanese orchestra) tunes, and dances. There are also songs available for weddings whose lyrics are beautifully composed using both alliteration and internal rhyme. The outfit the couple and their parents wear should match and thus be chosen carefully. Many of the wedding paraphernalia are symbolically meaningful. The symbolic meaning is derived from the artefact itself, the event, and the names of the artefacts used. These names are either interpreted totally or partially, and most of them are intended to wish the bride and the bridegroom good luck in their marriage. With changing times, some of the rituals are modified or simply not practiced anymore as people cannot afford the time and / or the money to hold them. In addition, the influence of religions (Islam and Christianity), rationalism and pragmatism has also affected the rituals. Many people follow the rituals not because they mystically believe in them, but because they have become traditional cultural events.
