Today, the idea of "Independent Living of people with disabilities" have spread, and many people with disabilities have found that "Independent" means "self-select" and "self-determination" and began to seek for their own independent living. However, people with retardation are not good at "self-select" and "self determination" by themselves, because it is hard for them to get understandable information or chances to experience many kinds of things include mistakes But they have the right to live independently, and they can live independently if they get helpful support from community. Our group conducted an interview research to find the social needs of people with retardation This time, we asked the people with retardation who have lived in group-homes in Okinawa, the helpers called "sewamn", and the back-up associations We especially paid attention to the needs regarding independent living From this research, I found that they need accurate personal community services and people which support the process of "self-select" and "selfdetermination" of people with retardation I noticed my idea about how the community services and people who support the people with retarded disabilities should be.
