The purpose of this paper is to articulate the overview and philosophy of the English Language Program of the Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Ibaraki University. On the one hand, the paper discusses the types of materials that are used, the type of curriculum it advocates, the language learning tasks that are performed, the language learning strategies that are promoted, how grammar and discourse are dealt with, what language acquisition principles are promulgated, and how evaluation of language learning takes place. On the other hand, the paper discusses how project-based learning enhances language learning and leads to learner autonomy. Several examples of these projects are presented.
