A Study of "Paraphrasing" Verbs by Using the Word Definitions of the Longman Dictionary of American English and Some Pedagogical Implications

For the last several decades, English education in Japan has been emphasizing communication in English and various ways to improve second language learners' communicative competence have been studied. This paper focuses on 'paraphrase' as a way to strategic competence among various ways to communicative competence. How to paraphrase verbs is examined by using the word definitions of the Longman Dictionary of American English and core verbs and useful expressions are also discussed.
