A Theoretical Investigation of Bottom Friction of Long Waves

The periodical solutions of linear long waves for cases of both laminar and turbulent flow are obtained by assuming that the shear stress acts on between the bottom and the water surface. The decay modulus of wave height and others obtained by the laminar flow solution are compared with those predicted by the laminar boundary layer theory. Thus it is shown that the boundary layer approximation cannot be applied to a case where the water depth is minimal and the wave period is long. By using the turbulent flow solution, the roughness height n, in which the bottom shear stress evaluated by Manning's friction formula is equal to the bottom shear stress evaluated by the present theory, is obtained. It is concluded that the proper value of n is determined only by the bottom roughness k_s.
