This paper presents a design technique for the two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) control system using PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative)×(n-2)/2 stage PDA (Proportional-Derivative-Acceleration) as a cascade controller for a class of n^<th> order plants. It is intended to satisfy both transient and steady state response specifications based on the root locus approach. This controller can be used instead of a conventional PID controller for the higher order plant to obtain better performances. The transfer function of a class of n^<th> order plants should not include zeros, the poles of the plant should have negative real part or at most two poles with positive real part is allowed. By this design technique with the proposed controller, the overall system is approximated as a second order system, and the desired performances of the controlled system are satisfied. For the plant with stable poles including the plant with small dead time, all roots of the characteristic equation located on the left half of the s-plane and the controlled system becomes robustly stable. In case of the unstable plant, when the controller gain is higher than the critical value, the unstable plant can also be made stable (conditionally stable). The cascade controller gain is adjusted to meet faster responses with a little or no overshoot. Robustness properties given by this controller proposed in this paper have also been demonstrated by numerical examples.
