It has been shown experimentally by the authors that the soot emission of a propane turbulent diffusion flame formed in open air can be reduced markedly with an application of low power DC corona discharges or low power AC corona discharges (14kHz) across the lower part of the flame, and that in the case of DC coronas, air and charged particles are introduced into the flame by corona winds, and in the case of AC coronas, only charged particles are introduced by diffusion. In the present paper, the variation of soot density and forms in the flame with the application of corona discharges is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Following results are obtained : (1) The variation in the soot form with respect to the height in the flame is not altered with the application of coronas. (2) In the case of DC coronas accompanied with corona winds, lower soot density is observed in the lower half part of the flame compared to the case without corona. (3) In the case of AC coronas in which the charged particles are introduced into the flame by diffusion, any marked decrease of the density is not observed in the lower half part of the flame. (4) The decrease of soot emission in the case of DC coronas is caused by the suppression of production of soot nucleus and/or growth of soot particles in the lower part of the flame, and by the promotion of oxidation due to the decreased size of soot particles, which form chains. The decrease of soot emission in the case of AC coronas is caused mainly by the latter process.
