The problem of two microstrip lines coupled by a slot in a common ground plane is important for the circuit design in MIC and MMIC. In this paper, couling characteristics of microstrip lines through rectangular slots in the common ground plane are analyzed. The analysis is based on the spectral domain method, the reciprocity theorem, the moment method and a theory of directional coupler. We extend the coupling problem of two microstrip lines coupled by a rectangular slot in a common ground plane to the coupling problem by N+1 rectangular slots. Coupling chracteristics are shown in figures as functions of dielectric constant of the substrate and of the rectangular slot dimension and of the number of rectangular slots. It is found that coupling characteristics of microstrip lines depend on dielectric constant of the substrate and the rectangular slot dimension or the number of rectangular slots in the common ground plane.
