Acoustic emission by a vortex ring moving near a solid body is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for three typical configurations of the vortex-body system. In the first case, a vortex ring passes near by a circular cylinder whose axis is set at right angles to the vortex motion. In the remaining two cases, a vortex ring passes by a sharp edge of a flat plate, its width being comparable with the vortex size for the one case and semi-infinite for the other. This work presents a basis of comparison between the observations and the theoretical predictions.
