A new effective ion charge number Z_R is proposed as an appropriate quantity, which characterizes the radiation loss power from a plasma contaminated by impurity ions, in place of the currently utilized effective charge number Z_<eff>. The value of Z_R in a plasma contaminated by metal impurities is much larger than unity even if Z_<eff> is suppressed to a value of order of unity.
